Here at the Dementia Cafe, or DC, we love an awesome food blog. Even more so if it’s filled with yummy recipes, positive messages and is 100% vegan friendly! So we thought what could be better than a not-so-little post featuring Holly Jade, an incredible young woman who’s just been awarded food blogger of the year for her gorgeous creations.
Firstly, The Little Blog Of Vegan is exactly that! Every single recipe is cruelty free and Holly uses natural, plant-based ingredients wherever possible. Secondly, her site’s bursting with food. We’re talking sweet treats such as teeny cupcakes, chocolate mousse, macaroons and mince pie pop-tarts, as well as savoury delights like avocado vegan burgers, herb encrusted pizzas and even a meat-free shepherd’s pie. It’s safe to say that Holly knows how to cook but what lead her to make such culinary magic in the first place?

Holly herself admits that she hasn’t had the easiest time of it, in fact she’d been quite unwell for a while which lead to her being tested for food intolerance’s. The initial results weren’t exactly encouraging as Holly has issues digesting wheat, gluten, yeast, high sugars & cows milk. Initially, this meant that Holly struggled to find food that her body would let her eat and with daily symptoms plus the awkwardness of not knowing what would be ok she was getting pretty worried. However, having booked an appointment with her doctor she was referred to a dietitian who advised her to go on the FodMap diet.

For those of you who weren’t sure what FodMap is, myself included, it’s a highly structured diet where sugary carbohydrates and alcohols found in foods naturally or via additives are removed to avoid irritating the digestive system. Holly found that on FodMap her body was much happier and she had less health problems, a factor that has since led to her becoming entirely vegan and wholly embracing a healthier lifestyle. Of course becoming vegan isn’t like waving a magic wand- you won’t suddenly feel better but over time, as long as you hydrate often and get plenty of vitamins, you’ll soon start to notice you have much more energy! Holly puts hers into maintaining her amazing blog, trying out new recipes, spending time with family and friends and enjoying cuddles with her pets.

You’ll notice that her recipes are split into different sections and yes there’s even a snacks page! Thanks to her step-by-step instructions, clear notes and wonderful hi-res images it’s pretty easy to recreate say her oh so sophisticated rose cupcakes, gingerbread macaroons or brownie s’mores. Holly is also fantastic at giving advice to fellow vegans – a recent post revealed what it’s like to order vegan coffee, i.e no cows milk or cream at Starbucks. If that’s not enough she also gives tips on what to ask the barista, as well as including a lovely long list of their festive favourites that can be easily adapted.

In short, The Little Blog Of Vegan isn’t just a great place to get ideas for your next delicious vegan meal as Holly really believes in everything she says. She posts often, encourages debate and isn’t afraid to share her snippets of her personal life- including snapshots from her 21st birthday. When you add up all this plus the fact that just swinging by her homepage makes me, a non-vegan, want to eat literally everything on there it’s perhaps no wonder that she’s gone and won Food Blogger Of 2017!
