We recently became Dementia Friends at the DC. This short video from Dementia Friends via the Alzheimer’s Society illustrates only too well the journey of a lady with dementia and her every day struggles with the disease, as she makes her way to a cafe to meet her friends. Once inside, the challenges don’t end there.
At the DC this resonates with us not only from a dementia point of view but for the need for purpose-built, to accessing the cafe, paying for items once inside and even removing obstacles that could interfere with one having an enjoyable experience. Beyond the points illustrated in the video, we ask ourselves questions like: Is there help available at a cafe about dementia or choosing home support or beyond this, care? Is the location wheelchair accessible? Can you go on any given day if you not sure whether it’s Tuesday or Wednesday?
While it’s important to mention that those with dementia can live well after diagnosis, it’s also imperative that as many people as possible realise the challenges that those with dementia face. After all, 1 in 3 people now lives with dementia.
