During my work experience I stayed at the “Novotel”. It was such a pleasant experience for me; the breathtaking views could have had some vast influence in this. Not only was I able to see Canary Wharf, but also the impressive areas around it. It became my little daily routine to go on the rooftop and search the places I have been to. I was really surprised when I could see how close Greenwich is. My favourite time at the hotel wasn’t during the day though. The gorgeous skyline at night time seemed even more inspiring.
Little things like this can not only make my day but also the one of a person living with dementia. A colourful surrounding and unique atmosphere can be the highlight of the day for a person with this disease. The pool on the lowest floor of the Novotel could make an enjoyable location as well. Fortunately the water isn’t very deep, which could minimise the risk of getting into a dangerous situation. This area would be quite inaccessible for someone who is a wheelchair user however. There probably are people in early stage dementia who still want to be physically active and take pleasure in sport. A gym right next to the swimming pool offers some athletic options for almost everyone. You can go jogging on the treadmill, box, lift some weights or cycle while watching TV. A new treadmill feature, which allows you to view a track in nature can come in handy and make a person living with dementia feel free and independent at the same time.
When staying in the hotel, I highly recommend booking a room on a higher floor. The rooms appear to have a nicer interior and allow you to see farther.
All good things have to end, so does my short work experience with this amazing charity, The Dementia Cafe. Tomorrow will be my last day here at the Offices based at Canary Wharf, but I happily will take memories for a lifetime with me. It was so exiting to get to know everyone working here and finding out how much effort, love and time Emily and her team dedicate to this amazing charity. I don’t think that I can leave this experience behind and just carry on with everything as if I have never been here. There certainly will be some more articles from me on this website in the near future.
Goodbye for now, take care guys!
