This month we’re interviewing Genalda Silva, a member of our team, from the Dementia Cafe HQ offices in London…
Hi I’m Genalda, I have been working for the Dementia Cafe for just over four months. I first came across the DC while I was searching for work experience, doing my gap year between my undergrad and masters. I have a degree in Multimedia and Arts Technology from Queen Mary University in London.
I was interested in the position because of the social media involvement and it wasn’t a restrictive role, I could offer design concepts, creative ideas and utilise my skills. After meeting Emily, and hearing about the DC goals, I could relate to the cause, as I have experienced dementia in my family.
What projects have you been working on for the past few months with the DC?
The main focus has been expanding our audience in social media and spreading the word. We want to get followers involved and give back to the community so we have organised giveaways and I have overseen this, contacting companies and dealing with big name brands, as well as small local businesses.
How has the DC helped your career?
I guess at the DC it’s more continuous work, at uni it’s more a range of work. The DC has helped my organisational skills. The merchandise administration side of things was really helpful, to experience a different area. Interviewing new volunteers has allowed me to see how people react in interviews, by being the interviewer. Working in an office environment has been good experience for me.
After my 3 month placement, I was offered a permanent role with a start-up that is co-owned by Emily the DC Founder. The DC gave me the first step on the ladder that I was looking for in an area that is quite competitive. Working at the DC has helped me fulfil some goals I set myself for my gap year: gaining industry experience and helping a community via volunteering. Through the DC I have achieved this And had the chance to prove myself and secure a paid role.
Are you still with the Dementia Cafe?
Yes, currently I am developing the website and assisting with social media. While I’m on a reduced schedule now, as I also have my job, I still remain committed to the charity.
From someone ‘on the inside’ – what’s coming up for the DC?
We will be launching the website soon, we are taking part in Spartan Race! We have an online sponsorship page where you can sponsor us (link below) and we are expanding the team with more volunteers. We’re so happy to have made such good progress.
What has surprised you about working for the Dementia Cafe (in the HQ)?
I was surprised in such a positive way by people’s response on Twitter etc. It’s been so positive! People have really responded to us and we’ve had amazing feedback for the cause. We welcome 2016 with hope and positive thoughts for the future.
